Dhaka, March 14: President Md. Abdul Hamid advised doctors not to harass patients with unnecessary tests. He said, be a great doctor and don't harass patients with unnecessary big tests. Sick and unfair competition should be avoided.

He made this call at the fourth convocation ceremony of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Convention Hall on Monday.

The President also urged the doctors to behave responsibly with utmost sincerity and spirit of service in providing medical services. He also directed the doctors and concerned authorities to take necessary measures to facilitate the service delivery system of BSMMU.

The President said that complaints are often received in BSMMU outdoors that the laboratory department is not opened in the morning. As a result, patients are being harassed in collecting reports. People have a lot of expectations from this institution. There is no scope for negligence, irresponsibility and administrative weakness in this university founded in the name of Father of the Nation.

Abdul Hamid urged the doctors to come forward with administrative initiative to stop all kinds of fraud in the name of medical treatment. He said that everyone should be aware that the reputation of the entire medical community should not be tarnished in the name of treatment due to some dishonest and fraudulent doctors. Often seen in the press, hospitals and clinics mushroomed, trading patients hostage. Many times the patients are subjected to extreme harassment despite being in the clutches of brokers.

He said, human service is a heavenly quality. A sick man trusts a doctor and a nurse next to God. Your good behavior and treatment is a must for any patient.

Abdul Hamid said that the authorities concerned with medical services should think about introducing generic names instead of commercial names like in foreign countries.

Three were awarded honorary (PhD) degrees at the convocation. They are Saima Wazed, president of Souchna Foundation and daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former vice chancellor of BSMMU and distinguished virologist Prof. Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam and distinguished orthopedic surgeon Prof. Dr. Kazi Shahidul Alam. In the fourth convocation ceremony, 35 people were awarded 'Chancellor's Gold Medal'.
