Dhaka, December 10: General Secretary of Awami League Obaidul Quader urged the American ambassador not to spoil the friendship with Bangladesh by making unwanted comments about Bangladesh elections and court settings. He added that Bangladesh wants to maintain its friendship with America.

He said this at the first preparatory meeting of the 22nd National Council at the party president's political office in Dhanmondi on Friday morning. Obaidul Quader reminded that "people have died in US elections too". America and Britain are shown to those who say, we are better than you. We do not interfere in your affairs. You also do not come to interfere unnecessarily. Sheikh Hasina will not listen to anyone's orders or interference. She does not fear anyone except Allah.

Awami League presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Salim, international secretary Dr. Shammi Ahmed and members of the reception sub-committee were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas, expressed concern over reports of intimidation and political violence in the capital, Dhaka, and called for respect for the rule of law. On Thursday (December 8), Peter Haas said in a message through the embassy's verified Facebook page, "We are concerned about reports of intimidation and political violence in Dhaka and call on everyone to refrain from violence, harassment and intimidation to respect the rule of law."

He said they encourage government authorities to investigate these reports of violence and protect the fundamental freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly. The ambassador also expressed his condolences to the families of those who were injured in the clash between BNP leaders and activists in Naya Paltan.
