Dhaka, March 3: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has decided to use drones to kill mosquitoes in the capital Dhaka. These drones will be used to spray drugs in areas where the corporation's mosquito killers or vehicles carrying fogger machines cannot go.

The technology will be used especially in canals, lakes or reservoirs, the DNCC said. Recently, the DNCC has conducted an experimental operation on Banani Lake and it is being claimed that it will be successful.

It is learned that Dhaka North City Corporation has been using modern equipment to kill mosquitoes. Besides, the company is conducting combing operations to kill mosquitoes every few months. Expensive drugs are also being used. But even then the mosquito infestation is not going to decrease.

Entomologists say the number of mosquitoes in the capital has quadrupled more than at any time in the past. The situation has reached such a stage that there is no way to control the mosquito infestation. In this situation, it is being examined whether drones can be used for the use of adulticide (killing of adult mosquitoes) through drones in ponds, reservoirs and lakes.

The DNCC also contacted the drone developer about spraying mosquito repellent, the DNCC said. After analyzing everything, the company has created an experimental drone. It can fly 25 minutes with one battery and 50 minutes with two batteries. In addition, the drone will be able to spray five liters of adulticide every minute. Initially it is capable of carrying 20 liters of medicine. The DNCC is also seeing success in the preliminary examination. A decision on the matter will be taken soon.

Commenting on the initiative to kill mosquitoes with drones, Dhaka North City Corporation Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Md. Jobaidur Rahman said, "Currently, the number of Culex mosquitoes has increased. "We can't reach the places where there are big water bodies to spray mosquito repellent, larvicide. We have to go by boat. We are going to take initiative to use drones in these places so that we can cover many places in a short time. We want to give relief to the citizens."
