Dhaka, May 25: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) plans to collect tax on marriages to increase revenue. The organization sent a letter seeking the approval of the Ministry of Law to implement this plan. The ministry has also approved introduction of marriage tax in DSCC areas. As a result, if someone plans to get married in the area under the jurisdiction of South City, he/she has to keep this tax in mind.

According to the revenue department of DSCC, according to the City Corporation Standard Tax Schedule-2016, there is a provision to impose taxes in addition to the wedding expenses for the first, second, third or fourth marriage. It could not be implemented so far due to various reasons. Now DSCC is thinking of levying tax on marriage to increase revenue collection. It is planned to be implemented from the upcoming financial year 2023-24.

DSCC chief revenue officer Ariful Haque confirmed the marriage tax collection plan on Thursday (May 23) night.

An official of DSCC's revenue department, who did not want to be named, told Jago News, "The law ministry takes care of the matter of marriage registration. According to the law, DSCC had written to the ministry to collect the tax money. Their letter has been approved by the Ministry of Law. Later, the Ministry of Law sent a letter to the office of the Registrar General of Births and Deaths."

The City Corporation Standard Tax Schedule 2016 states the rules for taxation at specific rates on first, second, third and fourth marriages. Section 152 of this schedule says, "For remarriage after the first marriage or the death of the first wife, the groom has to pay a tax of Tk 100. For the second marriage during the lifetime of the first wife, the groom has to pay Tk 5,000 and for the third marriage during the lifetime of the first two wives, the groom has to pay Tk 20,000."

According to the schedule, the groom has to pay Tk 50,000 for the fourth marriage under the same clause. This rule will not apply if the wife is mentally unstable or childless. In that case, the groom will have to pay tax of Tk 200 for the next marriage.

However, no plan has been taken to collect tax on marriage in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) area, said Maqbul Hossain, public relations officer of the organization.
