Dhaka, February 21: Achieving richness in one's own language increases one's ability to master the content of other languages, said Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman.

He said, "Besides the mother tongue, English and other foreign languages are favored by the university. Because when we know the language, there will be an opportunity to enrich our language."

The DU vice-chancellor told reporters after paying homage to the language martyrs at the central Shaheed Minar on International Mother Language and Martyrs' Day on Monday (February 21).

"We cannot ensure the use of language in science education and research," he said. "But it is also true that now the opportunity to study in various branches of science, especially medical science, engineering science has increased."

Emphasizing on the importance of standard language, Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said, "There is no doubt that the use of mother tongue has increased nationally. But the problem is the use of refined and sophisticated language. The influence of different languages and different cultures on Bengal has lost its originality. As a result, all that is needed is the use of standard language. There are some organizations that care about standard language that need to be taken care of. At the same time, Dhaka University is also very careful and cautious."

Regarding the protection of different languages, Dr. Akhtaruzzaman said, "Our country is multi-cultural. We have many religions and cultures here. This is our individuality. That is why Bangladesh is probably a place where religion, caste and different cultures coexist."
