Dhaka, March 2: The government has taken a landmark step for travelers to Bangladesh and India through the Benapole check post. Electronic gates (e-gates) have been installed in this land port like international airports. Six gates have been constructed in the first phase. Three gates have been constructed for entry into India and three for passengers coming from India. The number of gates will be extended gradually.

As a land port, this is the first time in the country that the electronic gate is being inaugurated at Benapole check post immigration in Jessore. This will greatly reduce the suffering of passport passengers traveling to India. The gate will open automatically when passengers show their passports at the gate. It will take only 40 seconds per passenger. Earlier it used to take at least five to 10 minutes for passengers to do immigration. No one without a passport can enter through that gate.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will inaugurate the electronic gate at Benapole Checkpost Immigration on Saturday (March 4) at 3:30 pm. The minister will then address a rally at the Benapole football ground at 4:30 p.m. Later at 5:30 pm will attend the function held between BGB-BSF at Checkpost Nomansland.

Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration, said that Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will inaugurate the electronic gate at Benapole land port. The automatic gate will open only when passengers show their passports. The gate will not open if a traveller uses someone else's passport. By doing this, the passengers will be able to do the immigration work more easily. It will take only 40 seconds to do this.

He also said, "Seven thousand passport passengers travel to India-Bangladesh through Benapole every day. If this gate is inaugurated, our work will also be easier. We are waiting for that moment."
