Earthquake leaves three buildings tilted in Chittagong

Dhaka, November 27: The Friday morning earthquake left at least three buildings tilted in Chittagong city, according to reports.

Kazi Hasan Bin Shams, chief engineer of the Chittagong Development Authority, confirmed the report and said the said buildings are located in Sabanghata area of Urdu Goli, Bahaddarhat Khwaja Road in Chawkbazar and New L Block of Halishahar of the port city.

The engineer said the buildings could be demolished, if deemed risky, following a final examination on Saturday. A letter stating the same will be sent to the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).

A study by Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology's (CUET) Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC) said that 78 percent of buildings in Chittagong city are at risk of earthquakes.

On Friday morning, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka, Chittagong and some other parts of the country.
