EC to hold polls in five city corporations by September

According to law, the term of a city is five years from its first meeting. Voting must be done within 180 days before the expiry of the term. As such, the countdown to Gazipur City elections will start from March 11. The election of this city should be completed by September 10. Countdown of Khulna and Rajshahi City will start on April 13. Voting is mandatory by October 10. Counting for Barisal City polls will begin on May 14, voting must be done by November 13. Sylhet City will start the countdown to the next election from May 6, with the obligation to vote by November 6. Mymensingh City Corporation polls will start on December 20. Voting is mandatory by 19 June 2024.

Electoral Commissioner Md. Alamgir said that two city polls will be held before June and the rest will be held after June. "I will finish the city polls by September."

Alamgir said that since we have national elections at the end of December or first week of January this year, we will try to hold the city corporation elections earlier rather than later. He said that there are many things to prepare for the national elections, that's why I will do that.

Stating the polling time in Gazipur from March 11 to September 10, the commissioner said that elections can be held at any time. As we have to prepare for the national elections, we will try to hold the elections earlier. Elections can be held anytime after March.

In response to the question whether the polls of the four cities will be held in one day, the commissioner said, "It will not be done in one day. There are six cities. Among them, Mymensingh City Corporation election is too late. We are not bringing it into context. The remaining five may be in two days. May be in three days."
