Economic potential of the common man will be ensured: PM Hasina

Dhaka, June 11: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that her government is working to ensure the economic potential of the people living at at the grassroot level, to make Bangladesh a hunger and poverty free country so that the nation can stand with dignity.

"If we want to build a poverty-free country, we must ensure the economic potential of the common man. If we want to increase the country's trade and commerce as well as rapid expansion of industrialization, we need to create our own market. And that is why it is important to increase the purchasing power of the common man,' the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while receiving grants from Ganobhaban on Thursday for virtually building houses with private funds and Coronavirus Assistance Fund. On her behalf in the Prime Minister's Office, her Chief Secretary received checks for the grant from various governmental and non-governmental organizations and individuals.

Sheikh Hasina, president of the ruling Awami League, said her party's main goal was to empower the grassroots and free them from the curse of poverty and thus increase their purchasing power.

She said they have started the fund by providing Tk 5 crore from Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust to provide shelter to every homeless and landless person and protect the people of the country from the impact of coronavirus.

"The coronavirus pandemic has hit the country's economy. We need to protect the country and its people from the effects of this global pandemic and we are working towards that goal," she said.

"The Father of the Nation liberated our country with the dream of giving a developed country to the people of this country - to ensure food, clothing, shelter, medical care and education for the people of this country," the Prime Minister said, adding her government is working tirelessly with the aim of building a prosperous and developed country of Bangabandhu's dream.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, various government and non-government organizations and individuals have already given Tk 263 crore to the private housing fund and Tk 110 crore to the coronavirus assistance fund.
