Eight killed in Sylhet bus accident

Dhaka, February 26: Six people were killed on the spot and two others died at the hospital when a Dhaka-bound Ena Paribahan bus collided head-on with a Sylhet-bound London Express bus at Rashidpur on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at around 7am on Friday. Another 18 people were seriously injured in the incident.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police BM Ashraf Ullah Taher said the two buses had a total of 36 passengers and six drivers, supervisors and helpers. There were 11 passengers including driver, supervisor helper in the bus. The London Express bus had 31 passengers, including the driver, supervisor and helper.

The deceased have been identified as Al Mahmud Saad Imran Khan, 33, a lecturer in the forensic medicine department at the Women's Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, Manzur Ali, 38, a bus driver of Ena Paribahan, Salman Khan, 25, an Ena supervisor and Jahangir Hossain, 24, a helper of the London Express. Driver Ruhul Amin (50), Nadeem Ahmad Sagar (19), Shah Kamal (45) and Rahima Khatun (30).

Rahima died at 12 noon on Friday (February 26) while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Among the dead were two drivers of two buses. and Ena supervisors and helpers.

Dr Al Mahmud Saad Imran Khan, 33, was taking his doctor wife Sharmin Akter Antora to Dhaka for a special BCS (health) examination.

The seriously injured are: Dr Sharmin Akhter Antra (29), Sheikh Md Ruhel Ahmed (30), Md Shah Newaz, Zahid Hasan (35), Jahed Islam (33), Ayan Hasan, Subarna Parveen (30), Seema Parveen. (28), Shanta (25), Selina Parveen (32), Chan Bibi, Mahi, Kamruzzaman (32), Rezaul Karim (45), Shamim Ahmed (24), Jasim Uddin (30), Md. Ala Uddin (60) , SA Salam (35).

Jasim Ahmed, a passenger on the London Express, said the bus driver was repeatedly overtaking on the way from Dhaka. He was also warned several times. But did not listen. Jasim said he was driving the bus very fast.
