Lightning | Death Eight killed in thunderstorms in two districts
Dhaka, April 14: Eight people, including children, have been killed in two districts of the country due to Kalbaishakhi storm and lightning. Of these, three were in Jagannathpur in Sunamganj, two in lightning in Shalla and three in two unions of Baniachang in Habiganj. Separate incidents took place on Thursday (April 14) between 4:00 am and 10:30 am.
A mother, daughter and son were killed when a tree fell on their house in Sulemanpur village of Patli union in Jagannathpur of Sunamganj at around 4:00 am. The deceased were identified as Mousuma Begum, 35, wife of Harun Miah of Sulemanpur village, her daughter Mahima Akhter, 4, and son Hossain Mia, 1.
According to the locals, the storm started with rain from night in Jagannathpur. At around 4:00 in the morning, a tree fell on the rice of Harun Mia's house in Sulemanpur village. Mausuma Begum, her daughter Mahima Akhter and son Hossain Mia, who were sleeping at the time, died.
Meanwhile, a father and son were killed in a lightning strike while cutting paddy in Shalla upazila around 9:00 am. The deceased were identified as Maqbool Mia, 45, and his son Masud Mia, 12.
According to local sources, the father and son went out to cut paddy in the haor near their house in Shalla Sadar Upazila around 9:00 am. A father and son are killed by lightning when a sudden storm begins. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shalla Police Station Aminul Islam confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, three people were killed in a lightning strike at different places of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj district between 10:00 am and 10:30 am. The deceased have been identified as Alamgir Mia, 26, son of Shamsul Mia of Eralia village under Khagaura union of the upazila and Jhuma Begum, 13, daughter of Abdur Rahman of Jatukarnapara Bara Bander of south-eastern union. He is Hossain (12), son of Akkel Ali of Tantari mahalla of the same union.
Locals said it was raining heavily in Baniachang on Thursday (April 14) morning. There was also lightning. Alamgir Mia, Jhuma Begum and Hossain were struck by lightning while cutting paddy in Haor.
