Dhaka, February 14: Health Minister Zahid Maleque has said that 85 percent of Bangladesh's eligible population have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

"In African countries where only 12 percent of the population has been vaccinated, 85 percent of our target population has been vaccinated," he said while inaugurating an oxygen plant at Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital on Monday afternoon.

The minister said, "We have so far been able to give about 170 million doses of vaccine in the country. Our target population for vaccination is 115.5 million, we have been able to bring about 85 percent of them under vaccination."

He said, 'We still have 100 million vaccines in stock. Even then, some people have not yet been vaccinated. There is reluctance among them. Those who have not yet been vaccinated are requested to get vaccinated immediately."

Zahid Maleque said, "Our doctors and nurses have worked day and night during pandemic and are still doing it. We have lost many health workers, including doctors and nurses. Not only themselves but also their family members have been affected and lost their lives. We pay our respects to them and pray for the forgiveness of the soul. We will always have respect for the way they served in this crisis."

"The health sector is being digitized," he said. "To this end, all the work is going on. Approval will be given soon. We are adding 10 dialysis and 10 ICUs in each district hospital. In all, 600 ICUs and 650 dialysis units will be introduced in the district hospitals."

The minister further said, "We have recruited 40,000 people during the pandemic. We have run medical colleges and hospitals all the time. School, college, university classes are closed but we did not close the medical colleges. A 1,000-bed hospital for Covid-19 treatment was built in a month, with 250 ICUs."
