Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 17: Voting was held in 57 Zilla Parishad of the country on Monday (October 17).

Polling started at 8 am and continued till 2 pm. In this non-partisan election, voting is done in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). There was CCTV in every polling station. Each center was monitored from the monitoring cell of the EC office. The Election Commission (EC) was cautious about this election.

Elected representatives of local government institutions under the respective districts exercise voting rights in this election.

Elections were to be held in 61 districts of the country, excluding three hill districts. However, in Bhola and Feni, there is no need for polls as all the candidates were elected unopposed. Apart from this, the election of Noakhali and Chapainawabganj has been postponed by the order of the court.

Twenty-six chairmen were elected unopposed in the election. Besides, 65 candidates for general membership and 18 candidates for reserved membership were elected unopposed.

According to the EC, a total of 92 candidates will contest for the post of chairman in the district council. On the other hand, there are 603 candidates for reserved women membership and 1,485 candidates for general membership.

Meanwhile, the EC was on high alert to keep the electoral environment fair and free from influence. EC is looking at this election with great importance especially after the suspension of voting due to allegations of irregularities and rigging in Gaibandha-5 by-election.
