Dhaka, November 16: Mustafa Osman Turan, Ambassador of Turkey in Dhaka, mentioned mutual trust as the basis of the relationship between Bangladesh and Turkey.

He said, "Though there were some misunderstandings between Bangladesh and Turkey in the past, now the basis of the relationship between the two countries is 'trust'. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the first leader who supported our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the attempted military coup in Turkey in 2016. This would not have been possible without mutual trust."

He said these things at the Meet the Ambassador program organized by the Center for Governance Studies on Wednesday (November 16).

Jamaat-e-Islami's then Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami was hanged in 2016 for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. After that, Turkey removed its ambassador from Dhaka. Bangladesh followed suit.

The ambassador said, "There was some misunderstanding between the two countries about the whole issue. As an explanation, Osman Turan said that if the death sentence of a political leader is executed, it creates political instability in the country. We have such experience in Turkey."

In this context, he said, after the military coup in the sixties, the Turkish Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Education Minister were sentenced to death. After 10 years, when there was a change of power, three members of the ruling party were hanged in revenge. But there is no place for revenge in a democratic state.

The ambassador also said, "At that time, as a friendly country, we wanted the stability of Bangladesh. We presented our suggestions. However, we did not want to interfere in the internal affairs of Bangladesh. At one point, the matter went out of control to such an extent that we were forced to remove the ambassador. When the situation is somewhat normal again, we The ambassador was sent back to Dhaka."
