EU-UK observers to national elections welcome: PM Hasina

Dhaka, April 20: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that we will welcome observers from the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom in the next general election. She said it while meeting outgoing UK High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson, who visited the Prime Minister at Ganabhaban on Thursday (April 20).

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists. The Prime Minister pointed out that observers in some local elections have a different agenda and said that they have established the voting rights of the people of Bangladesh.

The prime minister said that due to the continuation of democracy in Bangladesh, the rate of extreme poverty has decreased to 5.6 percent and the poverty rate has decreased to 18.7 percent. In the meeting, they also discussed the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the UK High Commissioner said that his country wants to strengthen economic partnership and cooperation in the aviation sector with Bangladesh.

She said that they want to strengthen cooperation with Bangladesh to fight climate change in accordance with the agreement signed between the countries on climate change last March.

Sheikh Hasina sought international cooperation for permanent repatriation of Rohingyas.

She said, the number of Rohingyas has increased greatly. Because, 40 thousand newborns are being added to the current children and it has become a huge burden for Bangladesh. She said Rohingyas are citizens of Myanmar and they must go back to their country.

Meanwhile, Robert Chatterton Dickson said that his country supports Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue.

Sheikh Hasina emphasized on the need to stop the Russia-Ukraine war immediately. Because the whole world is suffering in this war. She said, "We are always against any war." Pointing out that Bangladesh has solved all their bilateral problems, the Prime Minister said that Russia and Ukraine can solve their problems through bilateral talks.
