Everyone should be vaccinated: Foreign Minister Momen tells UN Secretary General

Dhaka, June 18: Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take steps to ensure that everyone gets the Covid-19 vaccine. He thanked the Secretary-General for declaring the Covid 19 vaccine as public property.

The Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude in a bilateral meeting with the Secretary General at the UN Headquarters. This information was given by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations on Friday (June 18).

During the meeting, the UN Secretary General mentioned Bangladesh's capability in developing vaccines at the recent G-7 summit.

He added that the UN has a special relationship with Bangladesh. She praised Bangladesh's leadership role in UN activities, especially in peacekeeping, climate change and women's empowerment.

At the meeting, Foreign Minister Dr. Momen congratulated the Secretary-General on his re-appointment for a second term and praised the leadership of the United Nations in his first term.

He also thanked her for her continued attention to the Rohingya issue. He said the Secretary-General's personal intervention was needed more than ever as the political situation in Myanmar deteriorated.

The foreign minister added that despite the public human rights violations, many influential countries have enhanced their economic and trade relations with Myanmar, which is disappointing. Referring to the humanity of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in providing shelter to the Rohingyas, the Secretary General thanked Bangladesh.

He said the world will not forget the generosity of Bangladesh in sheltering the world's largest refugee group.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister also apprised the Secretary-General of the benefits of Bhasanchar and stressed the importance of UN activities there.

The Foreign Minister further said that Bangladesh is on the way to implement SDG. He also called for continued support measures for SDG graduate countries.
