Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 16: Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has said that her party along with the government has taken appropriate and timely steps to protect environment and people from adverse effects of climate change. She called upon all to plant at least one tree sapling to carry out the tree planting campaign.

Inaugurating the three-month tree-planting programme of the Bangladesh Krishak League (BKL), the Prime Minister said, "I urge everyone to plant at least one tree in whatever space you have. Those of you who live in different cities can plant tubs on the roof or on the balcony of your house. Different roof gardens can be planted on the roofs of government offices."

Sheikh Hasina reiterated her call for planting at least three saplings of fruit, medicinal and forest trees during the monsoon season at a function held at Ganobhaban on Wednesday.

She planted chhatim, safeda and haratki trees in the premises of Ganobhaban.

As the Awami League president, she said her party along with the government has taken various programmes, including tree planting, across the country to protect Bangladesh from the harmful effects of climate change and the Awami League has always taken care of the environment and the people.

She said the Sundarbans was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998 as her government and party took timely and appropriate steps.

The Prime Minister further said that Bangladesh is the only country in the world which has set up a Climate Trust Fund with its own funds and is working to protect the country from the adverse effects of climate change.

The Prime Minister reiterated her call on the people to plant more trees to protect the environment, saying it was important to protect the natural environment.

She said, "Keeping such a mindset, our party Bangladesh Awami League has been planting trees since 1985 and we start the tree planting campaign every year on the first day of the Bengali month of Ashar."

Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the sixth Population and Housing Census-2022, which will be conducted digitally for the first time nationwide from June 15 to 21.
