Shahriar Alam Fakhrul's statement amounts to treason: Shahriar
Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 14: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam has commented that the statement made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, seeking US sanctions against the government, is tantamount to treason.
He made this comment at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday (13 October), while journalists were asking him various questions after his visit to the United States.
Mirza Fakhrul criticized the government at the BNP rally in Chittagong on Wednesday (October 12) and said that the United States has banned RAB. We want to say, not only RAB, but Sheikh Hasina's government should be banned. In response to a question about Bangladesh's relationship with the United States, Shahriar Alam said, "I saw Mirza Fakhrul's statement asking for US sanctions against the government. If it is true, it amounts to treason."
Highlighting the meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, the State Minister said, "He reiterated the importance of upholding human rights and free and peaceful elections in Bangladesh. They said that elections should be free and fair. We informed him about this - the election will be fair. But if a political party does not come to the polls, it is not our responsibility."
Shahriar Alam also expressed hope that foreign diplomats will maintain etiquette in Dhaka.
The State Minister highlighted Bangladesh's election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council at the press conference. He also highlighted Bangladesh's vote on the UN General Assembly resolution on the Russia-Ukraine issue. In this resolution, Bangladesh voted for the integrity of Ukraine.
