Dhaka, July 26: There is no danger of ships or ferries hitting the pillars of the Padma Bridge. Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said, "Misinformation has been spread in the media in this regard." Anwarul Islam was responding to a question from reporters after a cabinet meeting at the secretariat on Monday (July 26) when he made the statement.

The cabinet secretary said there was no danger of any boat hitting the pillars of the Padma bridge. Because, there is a pillar cap around each pillar. The crashed ferry hit the cap.

He further said that a channel has been fixed for the movement of ships around the Padma Bridge.

Earlier, media reports said that on Friday (July 23) at around 9:30 am, on the way to Shimulia Ghat with 29 vehicles from Banglabazar Ghat, Shah Jalal collided with the 17th pillar of the Padma Bridge on the Shimulia-Banglabazar waterway. Twenty passengers of the ferry were injured in the incident.

Abdur Rahman, the driver of the ferry Shah Jalal, said the ferry lost control and hit the pillar of the Padma Bridge after the cutout failed and the ferry's electrical system failed. This caused some damage to the ferry, and a slight damage to the water level of the pillars. However, no one was injured. The ferry was unloaded safely at Shimulia Ghat with vehicles and passengers.

Meanwhile, the driver of the ferry Shahjalal, Abdur Rahman, has been suspended for hitting the pillar of the Padma Bridge. BIWTC has issued an order in this regard after the incident.
