Dhaka, June 2: A fire broke out on the sixth floor of a 20-storey building named Rupayan Shelford at around 11:30 pm on Thursday (June 1) in Dhaka's Shyamoli area. The fire was brought under control after 2 am with the efforts of 14 units of fire service.

One body has been recovered from the building. Besides, 23 people trapped in different floors of the building were rescued by the fire service personnel.

According to the fire service, body of a man was recovered from the 19th floor of the building after the fire. His identity was not immediately known.

Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense (Operation and Maintenance) Lt. Col. Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury said, "Initially, it is thought that the fire may have started from the duct line. Fire incidents usually occur from short circuits in duct lines. The exact reason of the fire can be confirmed after proper investigation.”

"The fire service believes that the victim died due to smoke inhalation. We tried all kinds of first aid to save him. We spotted him lying on the 19th floor. We found him while searching the building,” the official added.

He further said, “Though there was a water reservoir, there was no point to lift water from the reserve tank. All the points found were inactive. Whether there was a safety plan in this building will be looked into. Apparently there are safety plans but they have not been implemented.”
