Dhaka, June 11: A fire broke out on a ferry from Shimulia Ghat in Munshiganj to Majhirkandi. However, no casualties were reported.

Shafiqul Islam, deputy general manager of BIWTC at Shimulia Ghat, said the ferry left Shimulia Ghat at 4:45 am on Saturday. Fifteen minutes later, a fire broke out in the upper seat of a cabin next to the ferry canteen.

He said that the fire was brought under control by using the ferry pump but the bed, ceiling, door and exterior of the cabin were damaged.

Shafiqul said, "No one was in the cabin at the time of the incident. The fire came out as soon as the door was opened. Later, the ferry ran aground at Majhirkandi Ghat in Shariatpur and the vehicles and passengers were unloaded safely."

The ferry had 35/40 vehicles and a large number of passengers. The cause of the fire is being investigated, the official said.
