Dhaka, May 19: The government has banned fishing in the country's sea limits for 65 days from midnight on Friday (May 19) in order to protect the proper reproduction, production and preservation of marine resources. Already the sea-going fishermen of Barguna are returning to the shore with net-trawlers. A few trawlers remain, but they are also returning to shore.

It is known that most of the trawlers who went to fish in the sea have returned to the shore. A number of trawlers will also return to shore before nightfall. Hundreds of fishing trawlers plying in Patharghata sea are moored at the fish landing center wharf. Fishermen are heading home with nets and fishing gear. Some are taking the trawlers back to the dockyard for repair and painting.

1 thousand 526 metric tons of rice will be given to 27 thousand 277 fishermen of Barguna during this ban of 65 days. Each registered fisherman will get 86 kg of rice during the 65 days of the ban. Meanwhile, the district fisheries department, coast guard and administration will take strict action to ensure that unscrupulous fishermen cannot ignore the ban and go to the sea.

The fishermen of Barguna coast said that they will follow the instructions of the government to protect the fish resources. However, they have to suffer from financial hardship as they do not go to the sea for more than two months. Moreover, they demanded from the government to get financial support in addition to rice.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of Fishermen's Trawler Owners' Association, said that hundreds of trawlers who went to the sea for fishing have already anchored back to the shore. A few trawlers remain, they will also return before evening. One and a half lakh people of Barguna coast are engaged in fishing profession. The sad thing is that the number of prisoners in the official list is 37 thousand 74 people. The remaining more than one lakh prisoners do not receive assistance.

District Fisheries Officer Biswajit Kumar Dev said, due to the breeding season of Hilsa and other marine fish, a 65-day ban on fishing in the sea and river estuaries is starting from midnight today. This ban will end on July 23.
