Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 2: People have witnessed a horrific flood situation in Sunamganj. It started raining on Friday (July 1) morning. Although the water level of Surma river has decreased a little, the situation is now stable. Meanwhile, about two weeks after the floods, the district administration of Sunamganj initially stated the amount of flood damage.

According to official data, the number of damaged houses in 11 upazilas and 4 municipalities of the district is 45,288. Of these, 4,747 have been completely destroyed, while 40,541 have been partially damaged. Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Md. Jahangir Hossain has mentioned this in a report on flood damage and relief activities sent to the cabinet department. However, he said the final damage would be determined once the floods receded.

According to the report, 25,204 fishes from ponds in the district were washed away, and 1,642 cattle died in the floods. Of these, 422 were cows, 37 were buffaloes, 669 were goats and 514 were sheep. Besides, 28,805 chickens and 97,831 ducks died in the floods. The floods have so far damaged 384 km of roads, 155 bridge-culvert connecting roads and 4 bridges and culverts in the district. There is still water in different places. It was also mentioned that the final damage will be determined after the flood waters recede completely.

In Sunamganj, houses and roads have suffered the most damage due to this terrible flood. No flood has destroyed so many houses before, so many roads have never been destroyed. Even though the flood waters receded, a large number of people could not return to their homes as their homes were completely destroyed. The concern now is how so many homeless people will get home.

However, the overall situation in the district has remained unchanged even though the flood waters have receded from the city due to low rainfall in the last 24 hours. Roads, haats, houses in the haor area are still under flood water. People are still living in relief shelters. Most of the houses are broken by the currents and people are not able to return home. Everyone is spending the day without eating.

The Sunamganj district administration has informed that the houses and roads of Sunamganj have been severely damaged due to this terrible flood. As there is still water in many places, the amount of damage is not being assessed properly.
