Floods, landslides kill 22 in Sylhet division

Dhaka, June 21: In Sylhet division, the most severe flood of the commemorative period has occurred on the hill slope coming down from the upper reaches. As a result, about 80 percent of Sylhet and Sunamganj areas have been submerged in water. Various areas of Habiganj and Moulvibazar have been inundated by the flood waters.

Although the upstream water has started receding for the last two days, the flood situation has continued downstream. In this situation, 22 deaths have been reported in Sylhet division. Of these, 14 are in Sylhet district, five in Habiganj and three in Moulvibazar. Due to the severe floods, there was no electricity, no mobile phone network and no internet service. The news of death is coming one after another after these activities started.

Last Tuesday (June 21) morning, the bodies of a mother and son drowned in the flood waters in Jaintapur, Sylhet. In the afternoon, Health Department Sylhet Divisional Director Dr Himanshu Lal Roy confirmed the deaths of 20 people but could not immediately give any information about the last two bodies recovered.

Dr. Himanshu Lal Roy said that the upazila health complexes of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts are being used as shelters and medical centers. We have so far provided medical care to millions of people. In addition, the health department alone has distributed 6 lakh water purification tablets and one lakh table saline.

The bodies of Nazmunnesa and her son Abdur Rahman floated in the water in Darbast area of ​​Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet on Tuesday morning. They are residents of Kalagram of Darbast Union. Jaintapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Al Bashirul Islam confirmed the rescue of their bodies. "Last Friday, Nazmunnesa went to her daughter's house in a nearby village with her son," he said. "Water also rose in the girl's house. On the way back from there, mother and son drowned on the side of the road. Today their bodies are floating."

Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Tajul Islam said that one person died while fishing in Haor at Kanaighat. He said, "On Thursday, a man from Thakur Ghati area of Satbak union of the upazila went fishing in Haor. His body was found in the water the next day."

The body was recovered on Friday but the information was released on Monday. However, the OC could not reveal his name. Besides, many are spreading the news of the death of seven members of the same family in Kanaighat on social media Facebook. However, OC Tajul Islam said that this is not true.
