Former Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar is no more

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 25: Former Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar passed away (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un). He was 80.

Confirming this news, his daughter Irene Mahbub said, when Mahbub Talukdar fell ill on Wednesday around 12 noon, he was taken to the United Hospital of the capital. He died there around 1 pm.

Former Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar was in the discussion for raising questions about the activities and independence of the Election Commission. He often disagreed with other commissioners. He also gave notes of descent.

Mahbub Talukdar was an efficient bureaucrat during his career. He was a brave freedom fighter. He was also known as a poet and children's writer. In 2012, he won the 'Bangla Academy Award' for his special contribution to children's literature. On February 15, 2017, he was appointed as Commissioner of Election Commission headed by KM Nurul Huda.

Mahbub Talukdar became 'former commissioner' on February 15. He did not appear in public much after that. Mahbub Talukder spent most of the six months after completing his duties in ill health. The former Election Commissioner breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the United Hospital in the capital on Wednesday (August 24).

Bangladesh Election Commission and Election Commission Secretariat have expressed their condolences on the death of Mahbub Talukdar. Deep condolences were expressed to his bereaved family in a separate condolence message.
