Four accused in jail for vandalizing Bangabandhu's sculpture; remand hearing tomorrow

Dhaka, December 7: Two madrasa students and two teachers arrested in connection with vandalism of a sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia have been sent to jail.

Police produced four accused in the courtroom of Kushtia Chief Judicial Magistrate Judge Rezaul Karim at 1.30pm on Monday (December 6). At that time remand application was made by the police. The court fixed Tuesday (December 6) for the hearing and ordered the accused to be sent to jail.

Kushtia Model Police Station Inspector (SI) Nishikanta Das, who is investigating the case, said the accused had been remanded in a case filed under the Special Powers Act of 1984 for vandalizing the sculpture. Of these, two Madrasa students were remanded for 10 days and teachers for seven days.

The arrested are Abu Bakkar alias Mithun (19) and Sabuj Islam alias Nahid (20) and teachers Al-Amin (27) and Yusuf Ali (26), students of Hefz department of Jugia Paschimpara Ibn Masud (RA) Madrasa in Kushtia city.

Khulna Range DIG Khandaker Mohiuddin told reporters at a press conference at Kushtia Police Lines on Sunday (December 6).

Additional DIG AKM Nahidul Islam, Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafat and other police officials were present at the time.

Speaking at the press conference, the DIG of Khulna Range said, "After this sensitive incident, all the police units were deployed using CCTV footage and technology." Within 23 hours, police were able to arrest two people who had taken part in the attack and two teachers who had helped them.

In a written statement to the press conference, it was said that during the operation, Abdullah (15) and Abdur Rahman (17) of Jamaat department of Jugia Paschimpara Madrasa Ibn Masood (RA) under Kushtia Model Police Station were detained and interrogated and video footage was shown. They know the two who vandalized the sculpture of Mujibur Rahman. They studied in the Hefz department of the same madrasa.

Analyzing the information received later, Abu Bakkar alias Mithun and Sabuj Islam alias Nahid, a student of the same madrasa, were arrested on Sunday from their respective villages.

They confessed to being involved in the incident during interrogation after his arrest.

On the other hand, the sedition case against Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque, leader of Bangladesh Khilafah Majlis, Amir Mohammad Jonaid alias Junaid Babungari and Syed Faizul Karim of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has been directed to investigate and file a report with the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

The case was filed in the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder on Monday (December 7) by Aminul Islam Bulbul, central president of Muktijuddha Mancha. The court accepted the plaintiff's statement and directed the PBI to submit a report to the DIG by January 7.
