Four dead, at least 20 missing as boat capsizes in Padma

Dhaka, September 30: Four people have been killed after a boat capsized in the Padma River at Shibganj in Chapainawabganj. So far, at least 25 passengers have been rescued alive.

Another 20-25 people are missing. The deceased were identified as Asmaul, 5, and Ayesha, 3, of Narayanpur area of ​​Chapainawabganj Sadar, and Nilufa Begum, 50, wife of Khairul Islam of Shibganj upazila. The identity of the other deceased was not known. The death toll is expected to rise further.

The accident took place around 2:15 pm on Wednesday (September 29) on the way from Boglauri Ghat in Shibganj to Russia in the upazila's Panka Union. Upon receiving the news, a team of Shibganj Fire Service came to the spot and started the rescue operation.

Witnesses said there were at least 60 passengers in the shallow-powered boat. After reaching the middle of the river, the boat was caught by the waves and sank.

Shibganj Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Farid Hossain confirmed the incident.
