Four women workers killed as Barendra Express hits auto rickshaw

Dhaka, January 26: Four workers of Uttara EPZ were killed when a Barendra Express train derailed at a level crossing at Darwani in Nilphamari. Five more workers, including the driver of the auto rickshaw, were seriously injured. The incident took place around 7:30 am on Wednesday (January 26).

According to police and locals, eight female workers of Uttara EPZ were going to work in an autorickshaw in the morning. The Chilahati-bound Border Express train leaving Khulna hit the autorickshaw while it was crossing the Darwani Level Crossing. The impact was so great that it threw the autorickshaw a few feet away.

Shefali Begum, 35, wife of Ashraf Ali of Dhanipara in Sonaray Union, died on the spot. Later, with the help of locals, fire service personnel rescued the injured and took them to the local hospital. Sahera Begum, 33, wife of Belal Hossain of Koranipara and Romana Akter, 25, wife of Mosharraf Hossain Badir of Dhanipara died on the way to the hospital. Minara Begum, 31, wife of Arman Hossain of Dhanipara, died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The injured have been identified as autorickshaw driver Apan Hossain (28), passenger Nazmin Akhter (30), Mina Akhter (30), Raushan Ara (34) and Romana Akhter (28). All of them are residents of Dhanipara area of Sonaya Union in Sadar.

Syedpur Railway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rahman Biswas confirmed the deaths of four people, saying the accident may have been due to thick fog.
