Fugitive member of Hizb ut-Tahrir sentenced to 11 years arrested

Dhaka, March 22: The police's anti-terrorism unit (ATU) has arrested a fugitive member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, who was sentenced to 11 years and 9 months. He was arrested on Sunday (March 21) in the Kanaighat police station area of Sylhet in a sting operation.

The name of the arrested member is Ali Ahmed.

He is accused in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act on September 6, 2010 at the Kotwali Model Police Station of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police. Superintendent of Police (Media and Awareness) of the Anti-Terrorism Unit Mohammad Aslam Khan confirmed the matter at night.

He is a convicted fugitive accused in the case. His sentence is 11 years and 9 months. After the case was filed, the accused went on bail and fled to Malaysia, hiding his identity in different parts of the country for a long time.

The ATU official also said that legal action was being taken against him.
