Gazipur cylinder blast: Death toll rises to 11

Dhaka, March 19: Death toll in Gazipur's Kaliakore gas cylinder explosion has reached 11 as burnt child Tawheed (7) died in the hospital.

She died on Monday (March 18) around 7:30 pm while undergoing treatment at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Earlier, Tawheed's younger sister Taiba (3) also died in the explosion. With this, the death toll in that incident increased to 11.

Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Resident Doctor Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam said that Tawheed died around 7:30 pm in the evening. Eighty percent of his body was burnt. Deceased Tawheed was the son of Sajal Mia of Bhatipara village of Phulbaria police station in Mymensingh. They lived on rent in Telirchala area of Kaliakor. The Tawheeds were two brothers and sisters. Tawheed's mother Sumaiya Akhter is a garment worker.

Earlier, at least 36 people were burnt in a gas cylinder explosion in Telirchala area of Kaliakir on March 13 around 6:15 pm. Thirty-two of them were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen said that none of the 32 people who were burnt in the explosion are safe.

He said that at least 16 of the admitted patients have 80 percent burn injuries.
