Global Peace Index: Bangladesh third most peaceful Asian nation, ahead of India, Pakistan

Dhaka, June 17: In the Global Peace Index (GPI), Bangladesh has gone up seven places in 2021 compared to 2020. The World Peace Index is compiled by Sydney-based think tank Institute for Economics and Peace. Bangladesh is placed 91st in the list with a score of 2.068.

The rankings were published on Thursday.

The Global Peace Index takes into account three factors- level of societal security and safety, degree of militarization and extent of present domestic and international conflict.

Based on the aforementioned factors, it ranks 163 countries across the globe.

Bangladesh has overtaken Sri Lanka after jumping seven places in this year's peace index. The index has also been affected by the deteriorating peaceful situation in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has slipped 19 places in 2021 compared to last year; Sri Lanka's global position in this year's index is 95th, however, it is the fourth most peaceful nation in South Asia.

On the other hand, India has improved two places compared to last year. This year, the country ranks 135th in the Global Peace Index and fifth in South Asia.

The peaceful situation in South Asia has also improved in Pakistan. As a result, the country has improved two steps compared to last year; It has risen to the 150th position. Pakistan ranks sixth in South Asia.

For the fourth time in a row, war-torn Afghanistan (163rd) is at the bottom of the list of the world's most peaceful countries. Bhutan tops the list of peaceful countries in South Asia, followed by Nepal. However, the two countries are ranked 22nd and 85th in the global index, respectively.

According to the index by the Institute for Economics and Peace, fears of violence in the region are low in Bangladesh and India. Even then, 25 percent of people in Bangladesh and 23 percent in India are concerned about violent crime. Afghanistan has the highest fear of violence in the region. Fifty-three percent of the country's population is concerned about violence.

According to the Sydney-based international research institute, Bangladesh's score in the Global Peace Index was 2.102 last year. At the same time, Bangladesh is 1.62 percent more peaceful this year than last year.
