Dhaka, May 1: Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader said the government is thinking of launching public transport ahead of Eid.

He said the government is considering launching public transport ahead of Eid, keeping in view the public interest after the lockdown. He made the remarks during a regular briefing at his official residence on Saturday. The minister also urged the transport owners and workers to be patient without going to the protests.

Meanwhile, the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 has suggested an exit plan to get out of the lockdown. Dr Nazrul Islam, a member of the committee and former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, said the National Technical Committee had submitted suggestions to the government for an exit plan after the lockdown. If these are not implemented, the infection may increase again.

Obaidul Quader said the government has already relaxed the lockdown considering Eid and Ramadan and working people who work in shops and shopping malls.

He said that today, May 1, International Workers' Day or May Day is being celebrated all over the world. May Day is the day of victory achieved through the struggle, solidarity, determination and blood of the workers. Bangladesh became a member of the International Labor Organization on 22 June 1972 on the initiative of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The General Secretary of the Awami League said that on the same day, Bangladesh ratified 29 conventions of the ILO, which was a rare event. On 27 September 1972, the Bangabandhu government announced the first labor policy with the aim of establishing a society free from exploitation. Where emphasis is placed on the development of employer-worker relations, peace and productivity of industry, protection of the interests of the working people and welfare.

He said that following in the footsteps of the father of the nation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, has been working tirelessly to protect the rights of the exploited, deprived, oppressed and hardworking people of the country. The Sheikh Hasina government is a labor-friendly government. Through the efforts of Sheikh Hasina's government, starting from the implementation of child labor and labor laws, the government has made arrangements to increase the salaries of garment workers and pay fair dues to agricultural workers.

The minister also requested the concerned people to pay the salaries and allowances of the workers working in different factories before Eid.
