Government school admission: Education Minister inaugurates digital lottery

Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni inaugurated the digital lottery program for admission in government secondary schools. She officially inaugurated the admission lottery at the International Mother Language Institute at 4 pm on Monday (December 12). The application form numbers of those who will be newly admitted in the 2023 academic year from class I to class IX in government secondary schools will be drawn by lottery. This lottery will be digital.

Secretary of Ministry of Education Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Director General of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Prof. Nehal Ahmed, Managing Director of Teletalk AKM Habibur Rahman and others were present at the event.

This year (in academic year 2023), against 1 lakh 7 thousand 890 vacant seats, 6 lakh 26 thousand 59 applications have been submitted. Accordingly, 5.8 students will compete for admission in each seat. And against 9 lakh 25 thousand 780 vacancies in the private sector, 2 lakh 60 thousand 933 applications have been submitted.

Earlier, in 2021 and 2022, the admission process for classes I to IX was done online and through lottery. In continuation of that, Maushi decided to complete the student admission program through digital lottery in the 2023 academic year in public and private (metropolitan, district headquarters and upazila headquarters) secondary schools.

In government schools, 59 percent of the seats are reserved for quota. General students will get admission in 41 percent seats.

Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education issued a notification on December 5. It can be seen that for the first time 2 percent seats have been reserved for the children of employees of various departments and organizations of the Ministry of Education. Children of freedom fighters' families or their sons' or daughters' families will get 5 percent, students living in catchment area 40 percent, children with special needs (disabled) students 2 percent quota. And 10 percent quota of the total number of sixth class seats in government schools will be reserved for the admission of government primary school students. In total, 59 percent of the total seats are reserved in various quotas.
