Government to turn Shishu Hospital into institution, draft approved

Dhaka, March 10: The children's hospital is being converted into an institute. To this end, the cabinet has given final approval to the draft of 'Bangladesh Children's Hospitals and Institutes Act, 2021'. The approval was given at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday (March 9th). The ministers attended the meeting via video conference from Ganobhaban to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Division at the Secretariat. Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told a press briefing at the secretariat after the meeting. 

He said, "The draft law was initially approved in principle on February 17, 2020. The Bangladesh Children's Hospitals and Institutes Act was enacted to ensure efficient management and efficient management of the overall activities of the Bangladesh Children's Hospitals and Institutes, quality of education, accountability in financial matters and improved services. It will have some special features - to establish a statutory hospital and institute for the purpose of ensuring physical and mental services to the children and improving their quality. There will be all kinds of studies including research here."

The Cabinet Secretary said, "Nutritional education, training and research activities for the child will have various types of laboratory, gymnasium and children's corner for the physical and mental development of the child. The proposed law will have a committee and board of directors, the composition is mentioned here."

Hospitals and institutes will also be able to conduct undergraduate or postgraduate diploma courses in specialized pediatric medicine and undergraduate and diploma courses in medical technology under a recognized university. It will also be able to conduct various courses with the approval of a foreign university which was not available before. The draft law stipulates that the child or maternal health can conduct or certify any certificate or training in this regard.

Asked whether the existing hospital would be modernized or a new one, Khandaker Anwarul said, "The children's hospital has been converted into an institute. For the time being, 100 seats are being added here. Then it will be the way the board decides."
