Dhaka, July 27: The government has approved the creaton of three new upazilas, taking the total number to 495. The three new upazilas are Dashar in Madaripur, Eidgaon in Cox’s Bazar and Modhyanagar in Sunamganj. The decision was taken during a virtual meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Restructuring (NICAR) chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, the meeting also approved renaming Dakshin Sunamganj upazila as Shantiganj, after demand from locals.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Ganobhaban and Cabinet members from the Cabinet Division virtually participated in the meeting immediately after the cabinet meeting. Later at the Secretariat, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam briefed reporters about the cabinet meeting and NICAR's meeting.

"All three are remote areas. These have been upgraded to upazilas with special consideration," Anwarul Islam said. "This decision was taken at the NICAR meeting. However, if the conditions are not fulfilled, the upazila will not be formed. Its structure (new upazilas) will be similar to the last 492nd upazila."

"Eidgaon police station in Cox's Bazar is 40 km away from Sadar. The government thinks there is a possibility of gaining a big resource. We need a unit there. The people of the area are also very difficult. The government has approved for this. Regarding the upgrading of a part of Madhyanagar police station in Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj upazila to the upazila, the cabinet secretary said it is also located in Haor, 25-26 km away from Dharmapasha. Dashar thana of Kalkini upazila of Madaripur has been upgraded to an upazila. It is also a remote haor area and still inaccessible," he said.

The meeting excluded the remote areas of Dohar municipality in Dhaka district and attached the nearby Union Parishad and some new areas where the city has facilities. Its shape is now round.

Khandaker Anwarul Islam said that the boundaries of Sylhet City Corporation have been extended at the NICAR meeting. As a result, several large establishments, including Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, will now move to the city limits.

He also said that the boundaries of Dohar Municipality and Shibchar Municipality of Madaripur were redefined.
