Govt is making country secular: Prime Minister

Dhaka, December 22: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the Awami League government is making Bangladesh a secular country where everyone has equal rights.

She said, "I am telling all of you (Christian community), we are building this Bangladesh in the spirit of a non-communal country where every person has equal rights."

The Prime Minister said this while exchanging greetings with leaders of the Christian community on the occasion of Christmas at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, which she joined virtually from her office. On the occasion, she wished Christmas to all the Christian community of the country.

Sheikh Hasina said that there is no single religion in Bangladesh, people of all religions are living here. We work for the welfare of all religious faiths.

Sheikh Hasina said, now in every case like jobs, and all kinds of identity cards, the third gender is mentioned along with men and women. "We have recognized them."

Referring to his government's initiative to provide free houses to all landless and homeless people, she said they are also giving their houses to improve the living standards and livelihood of the third-gender community.

Addressing the Christian community, Sheikh Hasina said that she had suggested Notre Dame College be upgraded to a university because it is a reputed college and has enough space as a university. "Now it has been made a university. We are supporting every organization and we do it so that people of all religions get equal rights."
