Dhaka, Sept 1: Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said that Bangladesh government is not harassing Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus for political or any other reasons.

"They (those who wrote the letter) may think that he (Yunus) is being harassed for political or other reasons," he told reporters at a briefing at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday. "We hope they will know the incident. If they want to know, we will give details about this transaction."

The foreign minister said that the government has not filed any case against Dr. Yunus, rather he is facing legal proceedings for cheating the workers and tax evasion.

"We respect him as a great Nobel laureate because he has brought honor to us," he said.

The foreign minister said he did not want to comment on the matter as it was a court matter.

He also said, "It is the decision of the court and the government has nothing to do with it."

Momen said that he believes that there is a gap between the knowledge of those who wrote the letter on behalf of Dr. Yunus and the actual facts.

More than 160 world leaders, including more than 100 Nobel laureates, have recently written an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, expressing deep concern over the safety and well-being of Bangladesh's only Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.
