Govt making all efforts to implement SDGs: Prime Minister

Dhaka, February 9: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that her government is working tirelessly to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She said, "We are making every effort to implement the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including the goals of the Eighth Fifth Annual Plan and the Vision Plan from 2021-2041."

Queen of Belgium and United Nations Special Envoy on SDG Mathilde Marie Christine said this when she paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at his office on Wednesday.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's speech writer Md. Nazrul Islam briefed the journalists.

Referring to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Prime Minister said that due to the war, the whole world has become unstable and the rate of inflation has increased.

She said, "The Russia-Ukraine war should be stopped immediately because the suffering of people around the world is increasing because of the war."

The visiting Queen of Belgium praised the Prime Minister for Bangladesh's extensive development in various sectors, especially women's empowerment, development of women and children and women's education. The Queen said, "I am very happy to see your progress."

Various issues including the Russia-Ukraine war, the displaced Rohingya population, women's empowerment, women's education, health, social safety net, disaster management, and climate change were discussed in the meeting.

Sheikh Hasina informed the Queen about her government's steps to ensure women empowerment in politics, defense and judiciary, and other areas.

The Prime Minister also briefly described his government's efforts in promoting women education as well as creating employment for women.

She said that her government has also brought vulnerable women of the society under the social security programme. This includes elderly women, widows and abandoned women.
