Govt. nominates three Bangladeshis for World Bank's ICSID panel

Dhaka, May 1: The government's law and justice department has nominated three Bangladeshis for the World Bank's International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) 's list of prestigious arbitrators and conciliators.

Former Chief Justice Md. Tafazzal Islam has been nominated as the Conciliator and Dr. Romana Islam, Associate Professor, Department of Law, Dhaka University and Moin Gani, Barrister has been nominated as the Arbitrator.

This information was given in a press release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim on Saturday (May 1). It further said that the nomination of the three persons from the Law and Justice Department was sent to the World Bank through the Ministry of External Affairs and the ICSID Secretary General finalized the nomination. The nominees will serve on the ICSID Arbitrator and Conciliator Panel for six years.

Earlier, ICSID sent a letter to the Prime Minister to select qualified Bangladeshi nationals from the list of arbitrators and conciliators appointed for Bangladesh. The letter was sent to the Law and Justice Department from the Prime Minister's Office. Later, under the direction of Law Minister Anisul Haque, the three were nominated and sent to ICSID, which was accepted by the Secretary General of ICSID.

ICSID serves as a major center for resolving investment and business-related disputes between state and foreign investors. Opposition parties can select arbitrators and conciliators from a panel appointed by ICSID. Besides, arbitrators were appointed in various ad hoc committees.

The ICSID panel list reflects the government's continued efforts to protect the country's image and rights in the international arena.
