Dhaka, April 21: On May 23, 1973, Bangabandhu was awarded the 'Joliot-Curie' Peace Medal by the World Peace Council for his various contributions at the national and international levels. On May 23, the government will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Father of the Nation's 'Joliot-Curie' Peace Medal with due dignity. Several decisions have been taken for this purpose.

On October 10, 1972, the World Peace Council announced the name of Bangabandhu as the recipient of the medal. And the next year on May 23, the then Secretary General of the Parishad, Ramesh Chandra, presented the medal to Bangabandhu in a grand ceremony at the Asian Peace Conference.

On that occasion, Ramesh Chandra said, "Bangabandhu is not only of Bengal, he is of the world and he is Bishwabandhu (friend of the world)."

It was the first international medal won by a state leader in independent Bangladesh. It will be 50 years since Bangabandhu received this medal on May 23. To celebrate the day, a meeting was held in the Cabinet Room on April 9 under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain. A total of 19 decisions were taken in the meeting.

Md. Sazzadul Hasan, Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet Department, said that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman receiving the 'Joliot-Curie' Peace Medal, a national programme has been planned on May 23. A meeting was held on April 9 to discuss how to implement this programme. He added, however, where the main event will be held is yet to be finalised. Md. Sazzadul Hasan also said that the matter will be decided at a higher level.
