Dhaka, January 27: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the government is taking all kinds of preparations to make the next general election free and fair.

She said this when outgoing Ambassador of Switzerland Nathalie Chuard met her at the Prime Minister's office in Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday (January 26). After the meeting, Prime Minister's speech writer Md. Nazrul Islam briefed the journalists.

The Prime Minister said that after enacting the Election Commission Act, the government has formed an impartial Election Commission through a search committee. Foreign observers will come to monitor the elections and they will work independently. The Election Commission of the country is completely independent and the government has no control over the commission.

Sheikh Hasina said, Awami League is the main political party of Bangladesh, whose base is up to the grassroots level. This political party (Awami League) was born from the people.

She said that BNP and Jatiya Party were born from the cantonment. The heads of these two parties first seized power illegally and became the president, later they formed their own political parties. They have no base among the people.

She said about Jamaat-e-Islami, they were involved in crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971. They have no connection with the people. She expressed hope that people will vote for Awami League in the next election and form the government.

Sheikh Hasina said that in the last 14 years, the government has brought about a massive transformation in the country. This was possible because the people voted for the Awami League and its coalition with a two-thirds majority in the 2008 elections. Awami League always believes in the power of the people and works for the development of democracy.

Swiss Ambassador Nathalie Chuard said that Bangladesh is turning from a less developed country into a developing country and her country will continue to support Bangladesh in its smooth transition. I will always be Bangladesh's well-wisher. The ambassador said she visited every corner of the country and was impressed to witness the remarkable and impressive developments.
