Dhaka, May 1: Today is the Great May Day. The day for the realization of the rights of the working people of the world. On this day in 1886, Hay Market workers in Chicago, USA sacrificed their lives to demand 8 hours of work. The rights of the working class were established through their self-sacrifice that day. Since then, this day of sacrifice of workers for the rights of working people is celebrated as 'May Day' all over the world.

The theme of this year's May Day is 'Worker-Owner Unity, Build Smart Bangladesh'.

President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of the Great May Day.

Greeting and congratulating all the working people of the world including Bangladesh on the occasion of the day, President Md. Shahabuddin said, "The role of working people worldwide in economic development is very important. The current government, which is friendly to industry and labour, is working continuously for the overall welfare of the workers and increasing their skills."

On the occasion of 'Great May Day-2023', Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the Awami League government is following the footsteps of the father of the nation and is implementing various activities to improve the quality of life and welfare of the working people of the country. Bangladesh Labor (Amendment) Act-2018 has been enacted to modernize and modernize the Bangladesh Labor Law to ensure safe working environment, social security and labor welfare by maintaining harmony and good relations between employers and workers.

On the occasion of the Great May Day, various labor organizations have taken detailed programs in accordance with the health rules. Programs include workers' rallies, processions, discussion meetings, seminars and cultural events.

National newspapers will publish special circulars on the occasion of the great May Day celebrations. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels will broadcast special programs and talk shows on the occasion of the day.

Jatiya Sramik League will organize this rally in front of the central office of Awami League at Bangabandhu Avenue today (May 1) on the occasion of May Day. General Secretary of Awami League and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader will be present and address as the chief guest in the rally.
