Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 20: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken initiative to hold hearings of some writs and leave to appeal related to the long-lying corruption cases against some members of Zia's family.

As part of this, the agency has approached the court to file a corruption case against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, his wife Jobaida Rahman and Khaleda Zia's brother Shamim Eskander.

Besides, Khaleda Zia has appealed against the 10-year sentence in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. The ACC has also decided to hold a hearing on this. BNP lawyers say the government is using the ACC to cover up their failures and to take action against all members of the Zia family in a vendetta politics.

However, the ACC lawyer denied the allegations, saying it was not a matter of prosecuting the Zia family. We have taken initiative to hold hearings of some long pending cases and some leave to appeal. Because, those who have filed writ, leave to appeal, they are not taking any initiative of hearing. The ACC itself is now taking initiative to hear these cases. It will continue.

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. She has appealed against the sentence. The Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to hold a hearing soon.

In this regard, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told Dhaka Post, "It has been a long time since Khaleda Zia left to appeal against the sentence. But her lawyers are not taking any initiative for the hearing. In this way, leave to appeal cannot be lain year after year. We will wait a few more days. If they do not take the initiative of hearing, then on behalf of the ACC we will take the initiative to hear Khaleda Zia's leave to appeal."
