Heavy rains kill two in Satkhira as Cyclone Yaas threat looms large

Heavy rains and thunderstorm killed two people in separate incidents in Satkhira Sadar upazila. At around 4pm on Sunday (May 23), one person was electrocuted and died while another was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm.

The deceased have been identified as Molluk Kabiraj, 70, of Ashandanga village in Dhulihar union and Nirapada Barui, 50, son of Megha Barui of Faizullahpur village in Fingri union.

Dhulihar Union Parishad (UP) chairman Babu Sana said, "Malluk Kabiraj went to fetch cows from inside the beel at around 4 pm amidst strong winds and rain. On his way back, he was electrocuted and died on the spot. Hurricane Yaas will hit, he died before that. The incident is unfortunate."

Fingri UP Chairman Shamsur Rahman said, "A few people, incluidng Nirapada Barui took shelter after it started raing heavily while they were on their way to bring back the grazing cows. As lightning struck, Nirapada Barui was killed. I'm already noticing the change in the weather. There have been storms and rains for several days in a row."

Satkhira Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Delwar Hossain said, "No one reported the incident to the police station. We am looking for details."

Satkhira Meteorological Department official-in-charge Zulfiqar Ali said, "There was strong wind, rain and thunderstorm in the afternoon. But it cannot be called the effect of Yaas storm."
