Dhaka, June 29: Due to heavy rains and downpours in the country, floods are expected across the country in the first week of July. A brief report by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Bangladesh Water Development Board has expressed this concern.

It said, flood situation may occur in low lying areas sucha as Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj, Tangail, Manikganj, Pabna, Naogaon in the northern, north-western, north-central, central Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Padma basins of the country.

However, in the north-western part of the country, there is no possibility of flood situation in the Ganges river basin district. The water levels in major rivers in the northeast and southeast of the country are expected to rise sharply from time to time due to the possibility of heavy rains, causing flash floods in some places beyond the danger line, the report said.

Md. Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, said heavy to very heavy rainfall was observed in several places in Bangladesh and upstream basin in June. As a result, the water of the main rivers of the country has increased but it has flowed below the danger level.

He added that according to the latest weather forecast, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in many parts of the upstream basin this week. As a result, the water of the country's major rivers may increase overall. In view of this, a basin-based conceptual forecast for the next seven days has been given for the major rivers of the country.

According to the report, the water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river is currently stable and below the danger level. In Bangladesh and upstream basin, Arunachal, Assam, Meghalaya and Himalayan foothills of West Bengal in India are likely to experience monsoon winds in the next 24 hours, resulting in moderate to heavy rainfall in many places this week. As a result, the water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river may rise overall in the next seven days and may exceed the danger level in the first week of July.

The report also said that there is no possibility of any cyclone / tidal wave in the coastal areas of the country in the next seven days.
