Dhaka, April 27: Maulana Mamunul Haque, the joint secretary general of the defunct central committee of Hefazat-e-Islam and general secretary of the Dhaka metropolis, used to provoke devout Muslims through various anti-state rhetoric. As a result, anti-state incidents, arson, vandalism and killings have taken place in different parts of Bangladesh.

Police produced him in the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Monday (April 26) in a case of theft and vandalism by Mohammadpur Police Station. Mohammadpur Police Station SI Sajedul Haque, the investigating officer of the case, submitted a report to the court requesting to keep him in jail till the end of the investigation.

Following the application, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury ordered him to be sent to jail.

In the report, the investigating officer of the case Sajedul Haque mentioned that the accused Mamunul Haque gave important information about the incident of the case. According to the investigation, the accused used to incite the devout Muslims through various anti-state statements by hurting their religious feelings. In the context of which anti-state incidents, arson, vandalism and killings have taken place in different parts of Bangladesh before.

He further mentioned that there are several cases against him in different police stations of Bangladesh. Tensions are running high among his supporters across the country since his arrest. If the accused Mamunul Haque is released on bail, there are fears that various incidents including riots and arson will be organized in different parts of the country again. In this situation, in the interest of proper investigation of the case, it is absolutely necessary to keep the accused Mamunul in jail till the end of the investigation.

Earlier, on April 19, in a case of vandalism and sabotage of Mohammadpur police station in 2020, the investigating officer of the case SI Sajedul Haque applied for his remand for seven days. Following the hearing, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate granted him a seven-day remand.

The Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Mamunul Haque from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in Mohammadpur around 12:50 pm on April 18.
