Dhaka, Feb 12: To prevent all kinds of crimes on the road, the work of installing CCTV cameras on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at a cost of Tk 152 crore is almost at the final stage. Passengers and drivers are expecting to get benefits once those are installed.

The project stakeholders said that the Dhaka-Chittagong highway is being brought under modern technology. In addition to better policing, highways will also be safer under this camera. These artificial intelligence (AI) cameras will be able to detect any type of crime and send immediate warning signals to the control room. Ambulance will reach quickly in case of accident, and will transport patients to nearby hospitals for free. There will be skilled health workers and trauma centers for first aid. Although this type of technology has already been used in developed countries, this is the first time this method is going to be followed in the country.

Officials of the Roads and Highways Department say that the initiative will reduce accidents on the road and increase the overall safety of passengers. 1,427 cameras are being installed through 490 poles in the 250 km area of Dhaka-Chittagong highway. More than 1,000 cameras have already been installed. Monitoring centers have also been set up in Meghnaghat, Daudkandi, Highway Police Comilla Region and Citygate areas to control them. However, the main command center will be at the Highway Police Headquarters. About 80 percent of the work of this project, financed by ADB, has been completed. Apart from the safety of vehicles and passengers on the highway, everyone hopes that these cameras will help reduce accidents and crime.
