High Court High Court's committee to translate all customary laws into Bengali
Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 15: The High Court has constituted a committee comprising concerned persons including the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs to take initiative to make the most common and basic laws of the country from English to Bengali and make the text suitable for public reading.
The committee comprises of Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Registrar General of Supreme Court, Bangla Academy, Law Commission, Faculty of Law of Dhaka University (DU) and Bangla Department. The court also directed to submit a progress report in this regard.
At the same time, the court issued a rule asking why all the courts of the country would not be instructed to publish reliable Bangla texts of the basic laws for the use of Bangla language. The Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the Registrar of the Supreme Court, the Chairman of the Law Commission and the Director General of the Bangla Academy (DG) have been asked to respond to the rule in the next four weeks.
A two-judge bench of the High Court comprising Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md. Iqbal Kabir passed the order on Monday (March 14) after hearing a writ petition filed by 10 Supreme Court lawyers. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir appeared for the writ petition.
At present most of the judgments and orders in the lower courts of the country are in Bengali. Now there is a growing tendency in the High Court to give judgment and order in Bengali. Even a decade ago, the number of judgments and orders in the High Court in Bengali was very low.
Meanwhile, a new artificial intelligence software called 'Amar Bahasa' has been added to the Supreme Court to translate the verdict into Bengali so that the general public and the litigants can understand the gist of the verdict. Using the software, the High Court judgments can be translated into Bengali.
