Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 8: The historic 6-Point day was celebrated on Tuesday through various programmes.

On this day in 1966, a nationwide intense mass movement was started in support of the 6-Point demand for the Charter of Liberation of the Bengali Nation declared by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On this day, 11 Bengalis, including Manu Mia, Shafiq and Shamsul Haque, were martyred by the police and EPR in Tongi, Dhaka and Narayanganj during the strike called by Awami League.

From then on, under the leadership of Bangabandhu, the subjugated Bengali nation advanced towards the mass uprising of 1969 in the course of uncompromising struggle. Later, the historical 6-Point constitutional movement gradually turned into the freedom struggle of the Bengalis.

As part of the programme, various organizations including Awami League paid homage to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban on Dhanmondi Road No. 32 in the capital on Tuesday morning.

On the occasion of the day, Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader paid homage to the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Later, Obaidul Quader along with the central leaders of the party paid homage to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on behalf of Awami League. After paying their respects, they stood in silence for a while. Earlier, national and party flags were hoisted at party offices across the country at sunrise.

After paying homage on behalf of Awami League, leaders and workers of various allied organizations of the party paid homage to the portrait of Bangabandhu.

At this time Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Awami League, Awami Juba League, Awami Swechchhasebak League, Krishak League, Mahila Awami League, Juba Mahila League, Jatiya Sramik League and other affiliated organizations of the party paid homage to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Besides, various organizations including Bangladesh Chhatra League, Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Juba League, Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Awami Swechchhasebak League, Dhaka University Chhatra League, Dhaka College Chhatra League, Bangabandhu Parishad, Bangabandhu Cultural Alliance paid homage to the portrait of Bangabandhu.
