Dhaka, July 7: Amir Junaid Babungari of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh went to met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday with several demands. At the meeting, the minister gave a verbal assurance to accept their demands, the Hefazat Amir said. Babungari made the remarks at a meeting at the Makhjanul Uloom Madrasa in the capital's Khilgaon on Tuesday (July 6).

"We have had a meeting with the Home Minister in the national interest, not for any personal reason. At the meeting, we demanded the release of clerics, the withdrawal of false cases, an end to arrests and harassment, and the reopening of Qawmi madrassas," he said.

"The Home Minister has given a verbal assurance to accept our demands. We hope that the government will soon accept our demands and release the scholars," Babunagari added.

"Numerous innocent scholars have been arrested across the country. They are living an inhuman life in prison. In the meeting, we raised the issues with the Home Minister. We have told them that the alleged violence against Hefazat leaders is not true. No Hefazat leader was involved in the violence. Some miscreants have tried to obscure the situation by taking part in various Hefazat programs. They need to be found," the Hefazat Amir said.

Hefazat Secretary General Allama Nurul Islam, Senior Naib Amir Allama Ataullah Hafezji, Naib Amir Maulana Abdul Awal, Publicity Secretary Maulana Muhiuddin Rabbani, Maulana Abdul Qayyum Subhani and Maulana Zahurul Islam were also present at the meeting.

Earlier on Monday (July 5) night, Junaid Babungari visited the home minister's house in Dhanmondi. After a two-hour meeting, he left the minister's residence in a black microbus at around 10:30 pm. Hefazat Secretary General Nurul Islam Jihadi was with him at the time. However, they did not speak to reporters at the time.
